
Position: Quality Systems and Environmental Leader
Primary Location: North Vancouver, British Columbia
Reports To: Technical Services Manager
Compensation: $120,000-$125,000 base salary + bonus and benefits
Salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. About This Role and You
This position reports to the Technical Manager and oversees the North Vancouver facility’s quality testing & compliance activities including being the leader of the Quality Management System (QMS) for the site. The position is additionally responsible for managing the plant’s environmental permits for land, effluent and air quality.
This role works closely with the Production, Shipping, Customer Service and Technical Sales departments. The role also overlaps with the Engineering, Responsible Care and Instrumentation departments as a resource for field instrumentation, sampling and sample analysis; particularly for items that have a manual testing counterpart or are involved with final product or regulatory compliance.
Qualifications
Advanced education bachelor's degree or higher. Chemistry or chemical engineering preferred.
5 years related experience in a manufacturing environment including laboratory experience
Proven experience with Quality Management Systems such as ISO 9001:2008
Previous experience or education in environment management
Demonstrated proficiency with analytical equipment such as ICP, HPLC, GC, spectrophotometers, titrators, sampling systems, etc.
Experience with reference methods including ASTM, Standard Methods, EPA protocols, and ANSI.
Experience with root cause analysis tools
Understanding and application of basic statistical concepts and techniques including DOE, Process Capability, Detection Limits/Level of Quantification, Variability, etc.
Ability to present technical information and conduct training sessions with wide variety of audience participants
Experience with business software platforms including SAP, Microsoft Office
Prefer experience with online instrumentation and engineering documentation tools such as PIDs, FDS, and HAZOP.
Ability to manage a quality system and quality audit processes
Ability to perform process/documentation analysis and identify opportunities for improvement
Experience with technical writing for procedures, work instructions, guides and manuals
Excellent people and communication skills
Ability to manage, motivate, coach and work with other people to accomplish Company and facility objectives
Customer service focus including the ability to communicate diplomatically; problem solver
Excellent communications skills; both oral and written
Responsibilities
Leads and coordinates activities required to ensure the lab provides effective service to meet priority business needs including:
manage analytical resources (annual budget, purchasing, use of external service providers, technician schedule, equipment PM program)
oversee QA/QC function for lab methods including method development and qualification, formal procedure creation and revision, calibration, and data traceability
evaluate opportunities for cost reduction/process improvement by bench-top modeling and experimental trials
anticipate new process/installation commissioning needs and develop and execute testing protocols
Conducts regular Lab safety/environmental meetings to ensure best practices used and risk areas are identified and understood
Manages site activities to ensure compliance with business programs including ISO 9001 and Responsible Care including
Training of site personnel to QMS elements
Documentation of non-conformities and assignment of corrective/preventive actions
Participates in/leads site audits
Works closely with plant personnel to troubleshoot process issues, address quality system outages, and lead investigations of non-conformities
Document, capture and organize troubleshooting efforts for reference.
Works closely with Supply Chain personnel and end-users to address concerns provide custom information, approve customer-specific specifications and analyze process or product samples.
Interface with other QMS resources (site coordinators, auditors, corporate personnel) to ensure consistent practices and shared learning
Maintain quality and regulatory certification programs including NSF60, CALA Proficiency testing, BC Kosher, HACCP, AWWA B301, etc.
Environmental Compliance: Ensure the facility adheres to all local, provincial, and federal environmental regulations. Manage the preparation, submission, and maintenance of required environmental documentation and reporting to regulatory agencies.
Pollution Control: Monitor and optimize systems for air, water, and soil pollution control to ensure they operate efficiently.
Waste Management: Develop and oversee waste management programs, including hazardous waste disposal and recycling initiatives. Implement strategies to reduce waste generation.
Sustainable Practices: Identify and implement sustainable practices within the production process. Conduct research to develop new and improved manufacturing processes that are environmentally friendly.
Environmental Impact Assessments: Act as coordinator for conducting land assessments and evaluating the environmental impact of facility operations. Develop plans to mitigate negative impacts.
Field Sampling and Analysis: Facilitate collecting and analyzing environmental samples (soil, water, air) to monitor the facility's environmental performance.
Regulatory Liaison: Act as a liaison with regulatory agencies and ensure the facility's compliance with environmental standards. Address any environmental-related complaints and issues.
Project Management: Act as focal point for environmental projects, including site cleanup, reclamation, and remediation efforts. Collaborate with scientists, planners, and hazardous waste technicians.
Training and Education: Provide training to staff on environmental policies, procedures, and best practices. Promote awareness of environmental issues and sustainability within the facility.
Assist in tracking and communication of environmental performance metrics
Additional Duties
Ensure full compliance with all site-specific environmental permits by monitoring operational activities and maintaining adherence to regulatory standards. Maintain current and accurate environmental permits and ensure all required reporting is completed and submitted in a timely manner to relevant authorities.
Coordinate and oversee environmental testing activities, including sampling and analysis, to verify compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations.
Routine purchasing of chemical supplies and services
Weekly scheduling of technicians
Ongoing adjustment and support of testing/sampling to align with process outages, plant shutdowns, restarts, arrival of bulk materials, setpoint changes, or unplanned equipment failures including:
highlight irregularities in daily analytical/process results, troubleshoot, develop potential theories as to cause and bring to attention of Operations.
support with rapid data collection for critical systems under high pressure until stabilized
act as liaison for in-line sampling equipment (draft/assist with PMs or breakdowns)
Training of new hires in analytical methods
Ongoing training of all personnel to QMS elements
Review provider invoices and submit service entries to accounts payable
Conduct plant tours/work experience sessions for specialty interest groups as requested
Utilize site systems (MOC, new chemical qualification, FLHA, etc.) for changes and improvements in sampling and testing
Coordination of periodic external sampling and reporting
Aids Plant Management in the generation of monthly scorecard against key QMS key performance indicators
TDG packaging and shipment of limited quantity samples
Enter notifications/arrange repair/PMs for equipment as needed
Develop and revise controlled procedures and raw material specifications
Attend production meetings and ensure process priorities are understood and analytical resources adjusted accordingly
Develops and delivers the Annual Quality Management Review to Plant management
